How to Hire a Nanny in 5 Clear Steps (Without Losing Your Mind)

July 16, 2025

So, you’ve made the decision to hire a nanny.

You finally said:
I need help.
I deserve support.
And I’m allowed to build a version of motherhood that doesn’t run me into the ground.

But after that moment of clarity, the overwhelm usually creeps back in.

Where do I look?
What do I ask?
How do I know if someone’s the right fit?
And why does this whole thing feel like another job?

Step 1: Get Clear on What You Actually Need

Before you post anything or start asking around, you need to know what kind of support would actually make your life better. That starts with listing everything you and your partner do. Yes, down to who packs the soccer bag or remembers to restock wipes in the diaper bag.

This step isn’t about what’s “reasonable” to ask for. It’s about getting honest.
Because if you don’t know what’s on your plate, you won’t know what to take off it.

Step 2: Create a Task List Before a Job Description

Most people start with a job title. But your real clarity comes from your task list.

What do you want help with?
What do you want to keep (because it brings you joy)?
What can go completely?
And what can be handed off so that you can feel like a whole person again?

Only after that should you start crafting a short and long job description, clear, warm, and rooted in what actually matters to your household.

Step 3: Start the Search, And Tell Everyone

You can absolutely post on care.com. But some of the best nanny matches come from personal recommendations. Let your neighbors, friends, coworkers, and even your barista know you’re looking. You never know who knows someone.

Step 4: Screen and Vet Intentionally

Don’t jump straight to interviews. Save yourself time by asking a few non-negotiable questions first, ideally in writing. Then, if they’re still a fit, move to a Zoom interview, and eventually an in-person trial.

And don’t forget to actually call references. Ask two questions:
• Why did you part ways?
• Would you hire them again?

Step 5: Onboard with Intention

Once you’ve found the right person, set the tone early. Review expectations in writing. Create a short handbook. Give them a real introduction to your home. Offer feedback. Say thank you.

This isn’t just about logistics. It’s about building a relationship. One that supports you and sets your nanny up for success.

There’s more nuance to each of these steps—and in the episode, I walk you through all of it.
